Wastwater. The best view in the Lake District
It’s rare that you get big views for little effort but Wastwater is one of those locations where even on the drive into the valley you will be awestruck by the views. All of the work is done by the car on this one. I personally think this is the best view in the Lake District.
The first thing you will be hit with is the Wastwater screes, there are steep slopes leading from under the water to the tops of the surrounding mountains. There’s a mixture of colours in the screes from the rock fall, heathers and grass.
Once you get around the next corner you will get the view right down the water getting views of the mountains at the end (possibly) reflecting in the water, depending on where you stand you can see Middle Fell, Yewbarrow, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and the Scafell Range. I’ve had pretty mixed experiences here, it’s either brutal conditions and you can’t see anything or it’s perfect conditions.
Places close by:
- Scafell Pike
- Great Gable
- Wasdale Head

From the top you get panoramic views across the tops of the Lake District fells and you will be at the highest point in England, which is pretty cool.
The weather at the top can be totally different at the top compared to how it is down at the waters edge so it is important to have clothing and footwear suitable for the climb plus a map. An app on your phone isn’t good enough as they run out of battery. Get a paper map and learn how to read it.
