Right Place At The Right Time
Photographing A Barn Owl
I wasn’t out looking for Owls this night, I was actually looking for deer but when I saw the flash of white moving in front of the trees that plan went out of the window.
The owl was out hunting on the grassland so I slowly made my way across to where I thought it would head to next. Fortunately the owl seemed to trust me and it came over to where I was stood and hunted in the area around me making it’s way between the grass and the trees. It was effortlessly flying around, hovering and then destroying whatever little animal was on the ground. I’m usually on the little guys team but I was 100% on team owl, you wouldn’t think something as pretty as that would be that good at killing. Nature doesn’t play by our rules.
I followed it into the wooded area and spotted it perched on a branch on the far edge of the woods so I leaned up behind a large tree to help support the camera and to hide me, the owl looked back towards me ready for the photo. After this it slowly flew towards me and over my head and I probably could of touched it it came that close. I just stood there though baffled at the whole scenario with a massive smile on my face. The photographer in me should of kicked in and got the wide angle lens out and got it close up but I enjoyed that moment to myself, which I completely don’t regret.
The owl then went to a different field and sat on the fence looking for its next meal, I crawled through the bracken to get a photo and watched it for 10-15 minutes here, the owl then moved on to the next field and I thought that was my sign to leave so I started walking back to the woods. 20 seconds later the owl came and sat on the post next to me and looked me right in the eyes, it was awesome. It posed for a few photos as it looked at me and down to the ground for something to eat. I got a little bit of video as well which I put into a behind the scenes video. I’ve not been able to find it since, tried 7 times so far but maybe the 8th time will be the charm.
