The Red Deer Rut In The Lake District | 3rd Time Lucky
If you’ve been following my YouTube channel lately you’ve probably noticed that I’ve been up at Martindale quite a bit recently. The plan is usually find deer then look for some landscape photos. This day was pretty much the same but I managed to get some different photos to last time which was great.
The day started well, we got there just after sunrise and saw a herd straight away. There was a large stag with a group of hinds. we crept up to the wall and got a few of them walking through the field and then through the river
From here we moved a bit higher hoping to be in the location the first set of deer were heading to plus there was another set higher up the valley. The stags seemed a bit more angry this week so we were hoping to see a fight this time so we found a spot behind the wall and waited. 2 stags starting facing off in the river but unfortunately nothing came from it
We watched the deer here for a while, seeing a mixture of sizes of deer. The biggest one was dragging grass up onto it’s horns marking its territory but that was the most action we saw from it. We looked up higher into the valley and spotted a few deer on the horizon watching over the fells. We decided to make our way up the valley to try and get level with them.
This was sort of the right decision to make. The light changed and become a lot harsher but it was nice to be in the sun for a change. We spotted a big stag on the climb up and had a stare down for 30 seconds before it went on its way. I did manage to get the silhouette shot of the deer we saw from further down the valley though. They were up against some white clouds so the silhouette stood out well.
We waited here for a little bit watching the deer before heading back down the valley. On the way down I found a little stream which created a waterfall over a stone wall. I set up the wide angle lens and shot a long exposure to get the water flowing down from the fells
I thought this was the last of the photography but in the car we drove past the old church of St Martin so I grabbed a photo. I think someone on Instagram asked for it a while back so here it is
