Herdwick Sheep Crossing The Road At Elterwater. Great Langdale

After photographing the sunrise at Ullswater, we took the scenic route home and went via Ambleside and Elterwater. Inbetween the 2 we were greeted with this view over Great Langdale so we pulled over.

As we got out of the car we spotted a dog chasing some of the Herdwick sheep over the fields followed by the farmer. This worked out well for me as the sheep made there way over to the road and then crossed over. There are not many things more lake district-y than the Herdwick sheep

Decision making in the Lake District. Herdwick sheep

We had just climbed up Helm crag – also known as the Lion and the lamb near Grasmere in the English Lake District. On the way down we walked past this old barn. In front of the barn was a little track which happened to be full of Herdwick sheep as they had just walked out making their way to fresh grass. This sheep got left behind by the big group, before walking out he checked if the coast was clear.

He walked out of the gateway and stood underneath the tree that was providing a little bit of shelter before he spotted the rest of the group and ran down the track

A Herdwick sheep checking if the coast is clear. The Lake District

A Herdwick sheep in a barn below Helm Crag walking out onto the path and checking if the path was clear. All of his friends had already made there way down the path leaving him at the back. He stood there for a little while with his head poked out before walking out a bit further and standing underneath the tree. Once he realised we weren’t the humans that brought food he went and caught up with the rest of the group.

I liked how the building was quite old and had some moss on the roof, it also had some holes on the front side that looked a little bit like a face as well, it doesn’t look like it wants its photograph taken… Or it’s asleep

Stare Down With A Herdwick Sheep On Pike O' Blisco

A stare down with a Herdwick sheep on the way up Pike O’ Blisco with Crinkle crags in the background.

We were making our way up to Pike O’ Blisco in the English Lake District to get the views over Great Langdale from the top. As we climbed up I spotted this Herdwick sheep staring me down so I slowly approached to get a better composition. The sheep stayed there for the photo, in the background, you can see Crinkle crags with the clouds rolling over the tops with the grassy verge rolling over behind the sheep.

I don’t think you can find many things more Lake District-y than the Herdwick sheep and the mountains. They always seem to have a smile on there face too
