Scafell Pike

Scafell Pike Being Swallowed By The Clouds

Scafell Pike. The Lake District

At a height of 978m Scafell Pike is the highest mountain in England. I like to start my climb from Wasdale head which means that even the drive there is beautiful. Driving down the side of Wastwater has got to be the best view you get from the car in the Lake District.

I usually start the walk from the National Trust car park at Wasdale head before following the track up, keeping the river on my right until reaching the crossing point. After crossing the river the track turns into steps and quickly climbs up before you get the option to a) carry on to the left and zig-zag up to the top or b) head right and climb the screes up to Mickeldore before finishing the ascent over the rocks at the top.

From here you get views right around the Lake District and on a clear day you will look over at Coniston Old Man, Dow Crag, White Maiden and out over the Bay. To the right, you will also see Scafell, the 2nd highest mountain in England. You also get views of Pillar, Great Gable and down to Styhead Tarn.

I should have more photographs from here, but this tends to be somewhere I take friends and family and the photography comes second. Well worth ticking off the list though of climbs to do in the Lake District.

Due to the height of the mountain, you also get great views from other mountains looking back at the Scafell skyline with the Mickeldore gap. I possible prefer these views to the one at the top of Scafell, but it really depends on what conditions you get on the day. You can see those views in the photographs below.

Difficulty: Difficult
It depends on what route you take, but going up there is a commitment as it’s the highest point in England. The weather conditions at the top can be temperamental too.
There’s a tourist route that zigzags to the top or if you’re more experienced there are different routes that require a scramble. I usually go up via Mickeldore
